After all, why go to the Bahamas if you’re not going to get off the boat and actually see the Bahamas?

This weekend, we had just spent the whole day in the car. It was a long trip down to Miami Florida to look at a car we wound up not even buying. A long, expensive, wasted trip. Talk about a pain in the neck already…..

So as we pull up in the driveway at about half-past midnight, I’m dreaming of walking in, kicking off my shoes, grabbing a beer, and heading straight to bed. What more could a guy ask for after a 600-mile drive?

As I’m walking up to the door, I hear the faint sound of running water. The first thing through my head is “that sounds like a broken pipe.” But I knew it wasn’t nearly cold enough for the pipes under the house to freeze, so I blew it off. Then I open the door, and next thing I know I have water running out the door straight onto my shoes and down the steps. As I look up, there’s a good 3-4 inches of water standing in my kitchen. WHAT. THE. HELL.

As it turns out, the hot water line running to our kitchen sink had rusted enough to crack, and the pressure kicked it off the threads, leaving water free to shoot out, straight into the bottom of my laminate counter-tops. If you know anything about laminate counter-tops, you know they’re usually built with a fiber-board base – which soaked up a lot of that shooting water and swelled to about half their size. Of course, that wasn’t nearly the only problem. The water had filled my base cabinets, soaking and ruining everything inside.

It had seeped into the base of the cabinets, and completely filled the hollow base behind the toe-kicks.

It had soaked through the unsealed cracks in our linoleum floor, ruining the OSB subfloors all through the kitchen.

It had run all through my living room, down the wall to my bedroom, soaked through the wall to the study on the other side. All of these rooms are carpeted – so more ruined floors and subfloors.

The water level had risen so much that it reach electric plugs for the refrigerator, the surge protector for our living room entertainment center (including our 52″ plasma), Blu-Ray player, surround sound, and the X-Box.

It had soaked the bottom of the sheetrock walls it reached so much that they were falling off the bottom nails.

The subfloor under the fridge had started giving away and sagging down on the joists.

The bottom of the outside doors from my kitchen had swelled.

The baseboards in all three rooms were doubled in size.

The stench throughout the house was enough to knock you down as soon as you walked in the garage.

And that’s just what I could tell.

Thankfully, my insurance company had a 24-hour hotline number to call. They had a professional crew at my house within the hour, and the house was livable by the next day. But that didn’t mean it was fixed.

The check they tried to give me was only half of the lowest estimates I was receiving. I needed professional help. So I called a public adjuster that my friend had used in the past.

We’re still working the claim. I hope it goes well, but only time will tell. I’ll be sure to post and let you know how it turns out.

1. Your Blackberry does not send or receive email messages

This problem usually occurs due to the lack of GPRS service. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) allows your device to access data. If you are having problems with the GPRS then you will not be able to send or receive email messages. To solve this issue, first you should carry out a soft reset by pressing ALT + CAP + DELETE keys. If that doesn’t work, perform a hard reset. After having done both resets, check your wireless antenna signal strength for GPRS signals. If you are able to make phone calls and access the Web, then your GSM service is still available. Now try sending yourself an email. If that doesn’t work, call your Blackberry provider for further assistance. It happens that a service could be delayed due to billing problems or busy networks.

2. Your Blackberry screen seems to be frozen

This problem is common among computer-related devices. It is annoying that sometimes quite strangely something happens and you suddenly can’t scroll up or down or click on anything while using your Blackberry. What does one do then? Well, there are actually two ways to fix this issue. You can either perform a soft reset (ALT + CAP + DELETE) on your cell phone or perform a hard reset if that doesn’t work. This is done by finding the RESET button at the back of your cell phone. Sometimes, you will find this button near the bottom, under the battery cover. Press the RESET button using a pin or paper clip and your Blackberry will start working again. No matter which method you try, rest assured that you will not lose any data.

3. Your Blackberry’s backlight or screen delay problems

Several people with Blackberries face their device’s backlight problems. These issues run from being unable to see the backlight at all to the screen delay flashing off too soon. To solve these issues, you need to go into your Options or Preferences and select Screen/Keyboard, depending on which model you have. From there you can adjust the backlight settings to your preferences. Make sure to set the Backlight Timeout to your preferred time setting if you think your phone screen delays flashing off. By setting the backlight timeout you will be able to extend the screen delay and stop it from coming on too soon. This usually works if you have an inconsistent or weak backlight. However if this does not work, you can solve the issue by installing the BBLight freeware program which can help to make your backlight settings more accessible.

4. Your Blackberry won’t synchronize accurately

Isn’t it annoying when you see messages you’ve already read still in your inbox after deleting them. This is the fourth most common problem that Blackberry users face at times and there are a number of causes as to why it happens. This issue could be caused by one of the following:

1. Microsoft outlook might be configured to empty the Deleted Items folder

You need to make sure that Microsoft Outlook is not configured to empty the Deleted Items folder every time Microsoft Outlook is closed, by completing the following steps:

• In Microsoft Outlook, under the Tools menu, select Options.
• Click the Other tab.
• Make sure that the check box beside Empty the Deleted Items folder upon exiting is not selected, and then click OK.

2. The Delete On might be set to Handheld

If the Delete On option on your Blackberry smart phone is set to Handheld, then change the Delete On option to Mailbox & Handheld

1. Reconcile email checkbox not selected

If the Reconcile email checkbox is not selected then select the Reconcile Email check box option by completing the following steps:

• On the computer, open Blackberry® Desktop Manager and double-click the Intellisync® icon.
• Make sure that the Reconcile messages check box is selected.
• Click Close.

Important: If the Reconcile Email check box is already selected, clear the check box. Close and re-open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Select the Reconcile messages check box again

1. FolderManagement registry value gets corrupted

You need to delete the FolderManagement registry value by following these steps:

• On the computer, close the Blackberry Desktop Manager.
• Open the Registry Editor.
• Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Synchronize.
• In the right pane, click the FolderManagement registry value and press Delete.
• In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click Yes.
• Open the Blackberry Desktop Manager and verify that the synchronization settings are correct.
• Synchronize the personal information management (PIM) applications

Warning: Modifying the computer registry can cause substantial damage to the Windows® operating system. Therefore you need to document and back up the existing registry entries prior to implementing any changes.

1. Email messages deleted with Delete Prior option from your Blackberry

You can solve this problem by completing one of the following:

• Delete email messages individually on the Blackberry smart phone
• Delete email messages from the Microsoft Outlook inbox after using the Delete Prior option

Me neither. But now that I’ve brought it up, it comes to mind that everything inside that box has its own little place. There are slots inside the foam where the instructions are kept. There is a little indentation on the side that holds the driver discs in place. There’s even just barely enough room to fit that perfectly sized box containing your new keyboard on top of everything else and almost not be able to close the box.

With all of the items they put in these things, you start to wonder how they size it so perfectly that they couldn’t possibly make a box out of less material. It just simply wouldn’t fit.

But these boxes don’t come just from trial and error, or wrapping a flimsy piece of cardboard around everything and making a mold. No, these corrugated boxes are specifically designed to fit the products they contain. But how would one go about designing boxes?

Believe it or not, it actually takes skilled engineers to piece together a perfectly crafted shipping container, that neatly and safely holds everything in place – making sure nothing gets damaged along the way. There are software packages available that help these engineers do their job more efficiently, yet without a specialized knowledge in corrugated container craftsmanship – that perfect box for your new Dell just wouldn’t be so perfect.

Next time you order anything – pay attention to how it’s shipped – and be thankful that someone took the time to craft the box so meticulously – otherwise, you’d have just wasted your money on broken electronics.

Bringing a floor back to its original shiny look is a hard job. It takes time, effort, and the right kinds of machinery. When you’re evaluating what kinds of equipment you wish to use for buffing, it is very wise to consider the weight of the machine, its durability, the maximum output, and a number of other factors. It is often hard to come to the right decision without having seen the buffer in action, so it would also be wise to visit some of the trade shows that the industry offers.

If you don’t have the budget or the time to attend one of these shows (they get rather pricey when you figure in your hotel, airfare, and other accomodations), then contact the manufacturer. They may have a distributor or even other willing contractors that are in your local area. You can then reference these people to get a better idea of the performance of the machine you are about to invest in.

If you don’t do your homework, it is very easy to get burned. There are quite a number of sub-par floor propane buffers on the market today. Be sure that you do your homework, and purchase wisely.

Doing just that can save you all sorts of headache down the road.

Polished concrete has been used for many years in warehouses, garages, retail stores, restaurants, and many other applications, but until recently, it’s use has been restricted to the floor, being on the ground. In the past couple of years, however, contractors have begun experimenting more and more with using it as a countertop option. It takes a lot of work, much preparation, and sometimes a great deal of patience, but the end result is certainly pleasing to the eyes.

The first step is to design the countertop. Seeing as how these will be custom poured, fitted, stained, and shined, you have many options. Don’t think that your countertops are going to look like a shinier version of your sidewalk, though. You can add all sorts of elements, such as actually mixing in pieces of metal, rock, or other substances. These will show through on the outside, and can look very modern. You also have a wide range of colors and concrete dyes to choose from. The plain, grey/white color that we see all around us is not the only color concrete comes in. You also have choices in the shape of your countertop. Rounded edges, circular protrusions, bevel, and corners – you get to decide.

Once you have your designs drawn up, the contractor will then custom fit a mold to the specifications you provide. These molds will most likely stay with the countertop until it is ready to be mounted on your cabinets. While it is important to have the shape as accurate as possible, there is some room for modification once the mold comes off.

The next step is to mix the concrete. This can vary depending on the type of concrete used, the desired color and texture, and any foreign objects that you wish to have within your counters.

After the concrete sets, it is time to stain it. This process also varies depending on the method of staining, the brand of dye, and other factors as well. Your concrete professional should be able to answer any questions you have.

Now comes the polishing stage. This will require special concrete polishing equipment that the contractor may have to rent (if they don’t own the equipment themselves – concrete grinders are somewhat expensive). The equipment used will grind the concrete down to an extremely fine grit (much like sandpaper smooths wood). Then a coating is applied and buffed into the concrete to create a high-gloss finish.

Your countertops are now ready to install. Installation depends upon the overall design of both your new counters and the base that will support them. Remember, concrete is much heavier than standard countertops, so it might require some extra support.
